Swinton Fitzwilliam Primary School

Maths

At Swinton Fitzwilliam,  we believe that maths is the foundation for understanding the world, essential for everyday life and a building block in the world of industry, higher education and modern society. We want our pupils to be confidently numerate and have an enjoyment and appreciation of maths. We want to teach them the skills to be able to explore, explain and communicate mathematical ideas through fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

With this in mind, we plan and deliver lessons that allow all our children to think mathematically, stimulate curiosity, make connections and challenge their understanding. We want our children to develop their patience, resilience and collaboration enabling them to move confidently between mathematical ideas. We will nurture confidence through a deep understanding of maths and ensure that problem solving is at the heart of what we teach.

Our teaching approach uses the National Curriculum and White Rose documents to sequence objectives for our mixed age classes and ensure skills are revisited. Lessons include fluency, reasoning and problem solving and include using manipulatives and variation to allow many opportunities for skills to be built upon.
